New Lockerbie bomber row misses the point

0 Comments | Sunday Mercury (Birmingham, England), July 25, 2010

Byline: GEORGE TYNDALE

THE US authorities are barking up the wrong tree in trying to link the release of the Lockerbie bomber to the fallout of the BP oil disaster that has blighted the Mexican Gulf.

Senior politicians claim BP lobbied the Scottish government to free mass murderer Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi as part of a dodgy deal with Libya.

There is no evidence to support the claim. Calls from US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for an inquiry into the release al-Megrahi are futile – nothing more than a shameless attempt to boost the poor opinion ratings of the rocky Obama administration.

Talk of conspiracy theories is the stock in trade of Americans, who are forever looking for a new figure on the grassy knoll, be it a lone sniper or an oil giant.

The suggestion of smoke and mirrors in the case of al-Megrahi, who has cancer, glosses over the central issue here: that the bomber, responsible for the deaths of 270 people, should have died in his cell.

The Scottish government insists the decision to free the terrorist was taken on compassionate grounds because he had only three months to live.

The Scots say they applied “strict justice criteria” in freeing al-Megrahi.

Justice for the victims of Lockerbie demanded he died in Scotland.

What We Know About Scentsy by Brian Garvin & Jeff West
in Business / MLM (submitted 2010-04-29)

Scentsy is a company that sells an alternative to scented candles. This company was created from a unique idea of breaking up scented candles and melting them on a warmer. The goal was to get the scent without the mess or the danger of burning a candle. The idea is one that took off and today it is what makes this company one of the fastest growing direct sales companies.

Two Moms, One Idea and an Eager Orville

Scentsy was created in 2003 by Colette Gunnell and Kara Egan. The two came upon the idea of creating a scented candle block and pairing it with a warmer to create a wickless candle. They started selling their creation at trade shows. This is where their product caught the eye of Orville Thompson.

Orville bought some of their candle blocks and warmer, took them home to his wife and discovered that this was a product he didn’t want to say goodbye to. Orville and his wife, Heidi, bought Sentry from Kara and Collete on May 1, 2004.

Moving Up

In July of 2004, Scentsy was launched as a party plan company. At this time the company was operating from an old ocean shipping container and Orville and his family were doing all the work. By that October, the company had grown so much that it needed to move to a larger facility.

The next home for the company was in an 1,800 square foot warehouse and office. Over the next two years the company continued to have impressive growth and needed to find yet another home. In June of 2006, the company moved to a new warehouse and office that was double the size of the space it was currently in.

By July of 2007, the company was again in need of larger facilities since the company’s growth hadn’t slowed. The new location was a 42,000 square foot space

They ask more questions than they make statements and they believe that others have good ideas to offer. Here are five ideas to help you be a better listener and gain the support of your employees.

1. Ask questions to show you care. Rather than telling your staff that there is a problem and that it needs to be fixed, try asking them what they think the problem is, based on the symptoms. Then, when you listen, they will be more likely to offer up solutions that they can endorse. Effective question asking is the key to open communication.

2. Ask questions that elicit buy-in. The next time someone comes to you for advice, resist the temptation to give them the answer. This is tough for many of us who have ?been there, done that.? However, if you really want them to believe in the solution, ask them what they think the best solution would be.

Celtic fans accused of pro-IRA singing

0 Comments | Herald, The; Glasgow (UK), Jul 27, 2010

CELTIC fans have been accused of singing inflammatory songs as trouble erupted before, during and after Saturday’s friendly against Lincoln City.

Police made 20 arrests and five people were injured during violent clashes between rival fans.

One girl was injured by a flare thrown in the away end after more than 2000 Celtic fans made the journey south.

A St George’s flag was also burned during clashes and pro-IRA and anti-military songs were sung.

However, despite the large contingent of away supporters Lincolnshire Police confirmed that the majority of those arrested were home fans.

Football Intelligence Officer PC Andy Pearson said: “There was some disorder at the Golden Cross pub and some after the match and a lot of that was flared by the inflammatory nature of the songs from Celtic fans.

“Many of the incidents were fuelled by alcohol, but apart from a fight between Celtic fans there were no problems at the ground.”

Five people taken to hospital were released after treatment. Of the 20 people who were arrested, 12 were from the Lincoln area.

News Analysis: Mystery surrounds German-Israeli submarine deal

by David Harris

JERUSALEM, July 25 (Xinhua) — Tongues are wagging in Germany and Israel after the publication of reports and subsequent denials surrounding the sale of a German submarine to the Jewish state.

There is speculation in the media that during a phone conversation a week ago Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threw his weight behind an Israeli request to have the price reduced on the sale of a Dolphin class sub.

While Berlin confirms Netanyahu spoke with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the contents of the parley are not being made public.

The deal is the latest in a series that dates back to the 1990s. The previous contracts were to some extent underwritten by the German government.

Now Berlin says it is not involved in formal negotiations over the purchase of a new submarine and with that, effectively denies reports that the countries are haggling over the price tag.

Likewise, the Israeli Defense Ministry issued a denial on Friday regarding the purchase of what would be its sixth sub.

Yet the highly regarded Defense News publication maintains that the allies have been discussing the purchase for the last year.

SECRETIVE MILITARY COOPERATION

The defense links between the two countries are strong. Whilst they began in the wake of the Holocaust and a sense of responsibility carried by the new Germany, they have developed a dynamic of their own.

In the mid 1950s Germany exported two coastal patrol vessels to Israel. In all the time since then little has been made public about the relationship but those in the know say it is very positive.

Some of the early cooperation developed out of Israel’s wars with its Arab neighbors. As Israel captured Russian-made armaments it passed them on to countries such as Germany for evaluation. The Germans and others were then able to copy the manufacture of those weapons or to use the information to create defense systems.

Often the signs of a healthy defense relationship have only come to the fore in times of crisis. In 2002 when the second Palestinian intifada or uprising was raging, the Germans reportedly stopped the delivery of military components to Israel, including parts for tanks. The Germans denied the cessation was the result of Berlin’s views on Israeli actions in the territories, preferring to blame internal administrative issues.

The sales have not all been in one direction. Germany is known to have purchased the Spike anti-tank missile from the Israeli governmental firm Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.

“Characterized by an extremely high technical commonality of the various missiles and launch mechanisms, the Spike system offers very low life-cycle costs. Spike missiles have become an indispensable weapon for modern armed forces, ranging from infantry and army aviation to naval defense forces,” reads the product manual.

The degree to which the countries cooperate in joint programs is unclear, but in 2008 it was reported that together they were developing a nuclear warning system — a project known as Operation Bluebird

If you own a property and are ready to pledge it as security, then go for a secured
personal loan. Here, you get the advantage of getting approval for a larger loan amount, lower interest rate and flexible terms and conditions. This lessens the burden of the debt. However, there is always the risk of losing your property in case you fail to repay the loan amount on time.
If you do not own a property or do not want to risk your property, then unsecured personal loan is the ideal choice. You get the loan without pledging anything. However, you have to settle for a higher interest rate and strict terms and conditions.

Many people opt for a personal loan to consolidate their debts. It is quite cumbersome to manage multiple debts. Moreover, one tends to miss a few payments as it becomes virtually impossible to keep a track of so many debt repayments.

Drum handlers hold

Drum handlers hold the drums in one of two ways. The most common method is for the drum handler to clamp onto the rim of the drum in one or two places. This is perfect for keeping the drum upright and stable during transportation. Another way is to attach the drum by chaining the drum to a drum faucet from the cab of the forklift. This way, the forklift operator has the option to control the speed at which the drum contents are dumped by operating a chain pulley.

Carpet poles are long, sturdy poles that are used to carry roles of material such as carpet. They can be mounted to the carriage or to the forks. Carpet poles are useful because they allow forklift operators to safely transport carpet rolls by putting a pole through the hollow center of the roll.

There?s no reason

There?s no reason to hire you if you?ve already given them a reason for you to quit.

3. Also, you don?t want to speak ill of your co-workers. Those were or are your teammates, and the same rule holds true as reason #1. This world is too small, and good jobs are too few to take the chance.

So what CAN you say?

1. You can say that you wanted a new opportunity. That you felt that you had taken your current or past position as far as you could within the company, you had achieved X, Y and Z, and now feel that it?s time for you to learn a different aspect of the business, or to work for a bigger (or smaller) company. The key here is to focus on the future. Focus on the opportunities you see in this new position, how it will help you grow and learn and not what was wrong with the last company you worked for.

2. If you are applying for a job that touts flexible hours, work from home or excellent benefits in the job posting, you can mention those qualities as a reason to look into this new position.

It is not easy to break old habits, but it can be done and soon you will find that the new behavior is second nature.

Keep in mind that your emotional health is closely related to your physical health. A sensible diet and exercise will do wonders for your self-image.
